We all have our own share of issues. The question is, what will we do with them? Will we be honest about our shortcomings and where we can grow? Or will we choose not to—deciding to either ignore them, or even coming up with reasons why they’re not actually that bad?

We can get pretty good at this, too. For instance, we might say, I don’t have an anger issue; I’m just passionate. Or, I’m not a jerk; I just tell people the truth. And there may be some truth to parts of these explanations. But by shifting the focus away from our responsibility, we can avoid dealing with the areas that really do need our attention.

In the end, if we’re never honest with ourselves about what needs to change, it’s unlikely that it ever will.
